When i saw that it was set in the wild west I remembered my grandmother always reading westerns and thought i wouldn't like it at all. Let me tell you... this ain't my grandma's old west and i loved it!!
Blackwell's books always have very original story ideas and characters. The Soren Chase series, (The Forest of Forever, etc) is one of my all time favorites and I can already see this series is going to be awesome as well!
Here you get a kickass female outlaw who will steal you blind one minute and save you from a storm full of monsters the next. The story starts off with a bang, (pun intended), and the action doesn't stop. The ending is satisfying, although I did shed a few tears, and it sets up an exciting storyline for future books. I was so disappointed when it ended.
Can you really mix up an urban fantasy with a western then throw in some monsters and have this crazy mixture work? You bet you can and it's gonna be a hell of a ride! Yipee ki yay......!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2023I took my time getting into this book, but once I got truly invested in seeing what the characters were going to do I didn't put it down until I finished it at 4 dark 30 this morning. The characters are mostly likeable and interesting and the bad guys get their just deserts in the end. Don't skip passages and stick with it to the end. If you like spooky reading with a Western twist you should really enjoy this one. Im going to be finding other books by this author and see what all he's got.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2019From the moment I heard Rob Blackwell was working on a new project I was excited and knew that I would read his new work the second it was released. I have been a fan of his work since reading The Forest of Forever (which I highly recommend if you haven't read it btw.) I was drawn into Riders on the Storm from the first few pages and didn't want to put it down. What I like most about Blackwell's books is his character dialogue. It seems very realistic to the situation, and his characters are always true to themselves. There's always plenty of action, and just the right amount of description to set the scene. (I personally find too much description a bit tedious.)
If you like action and good character development, give Riders on the Storm a shot, I think you will enjoy it!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2019There is little that Rob Blackwell writes that is not pure excellence and very unique. However when I heard sci-fi western I will admit to a brief raised eyebrow. I am not typically a reader of westerns. If you feel the same let me tell you - this book will convert you. It is a true page turner, I could not put it down until I was finished, and then immediately wanted more.
Set in the year 1883 in the Dakota Territory it is decidedly unsci-fi in many ways. Horses and six shooters are the standard fare. No space blasters, shiny silver space suits and hover cars here. Throw in bandits, stick-em-up bank heists and stagecoach robberies, and it is looking almost decidedly normal. Then comes the twist. The rolling storm clouds, that are squirming, alive with monsters. These are the Vipers and they are impossibly fast, can’t be killed with regular bullets and if they so much as scratch you, well say your goodbyes fast.
Early on in the story we meet Jules Castle - she is a thief, con artist, the daughter of an outlaw and raised amongst outlaws. She is the best of the best. Whip smart, ruthless and unbeatable with her gun, and with her sister by her side, nothing can stop her, except perhaps the Vipers. She is searching for clues to track down her father, who vanished mysteriously a few years before. However pursued by the U.S army, some of her father's former posse and not to mention the Vipers how successful can she be?
This book evoked memories of Firefly, but dare I say it, even better?! More Jules Castle please!!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2019From the moment I picked up this book, I couldn't set it down. If you're a fan of Rob Blackwell's series, The Sanheim Chronicles and The Soren Chase novels, then I imagine that you're going to love this book also. Whereas before Rob's woven urban fantasy, mystery and suspense together perfectly to keep us on the edge of our seats, this time he's done it with a Western flair.
Imagine traveling back in time to the Old Wild West. Then mix that experience together with a healthy dose of monsters, ancient magical artifacts, and good old fashioned tale-spinning and you'll be riding along with Jules Castle and the gang in Riders on the Storm by Rob Blackwell. I can't wait to see if this great read transforms itself into a new series. BTW: I loved all the historical references at the beginning of each chapter, they set the stage for the mind to follow.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2019The UF world is over crowded with vampires, werewolves, and fairies (oh my). So many y UF books are paranormal romances with love triangles and drama fit for a teen show.
Rob has created a beautifully crafted Western fantasy, complete with complex characters who don't fall easily into tropes.
I liked Jules. She's not a "perfect UF heroine." She isn't the quiet girl who goes from no friends to most popular overnight. She's tough. She's a little coarse. She fights for what she wants.
The bad guys aren't trite or empty or singly motivated.
I thought this was a refreshing entry into the sameness UF has become.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2019This book is very interesting, it is a Western with a supernatural take and it took me for a wild ride. The story made me go through a wide range of emotions like funny, sad, thrilling, nail biting and more. This book is a real page turner, never a dull moment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic read
Enjoyed this story, a new slant on sci fi western. It kept me engaged and turning pages. The female villain/hero grabs you and drags you with her. I am looking forward to more of this adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this book
A new take on western and paranormal and it Works! (Unlike cowboys and aliens “shudder”)
A wonderful antiheroe who is a strong woman with non of the suddenly discovered superpowers to save the world.
And now on to what it is. It is a wonderful suspense filled book that kept me reading straight through to the end in one go and no breaks. I truly loved this book and I think you will too. Give it a try. You will be glad you did.
And now I wait impatiently for the next book in series. 😁
